Protecting and restoring the lands and waters of the Virginia Piedmont, while building stronger, more sustainable communities.
Virginia's Parks and Battlefields are at Risk
Virginia’s state and national parks, battlefields, and other historic and recreational sites are under threat from uncontrolled data center development. One notable example is Wilderness Battlefield, in Orange County, which was named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in 2024 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The primary threat to the battlefield is a planned megadevelopment called Wilderness Crossing. Totaling approximately 2,600 acres, the site is slated for a mix of residential, commercial and data center space.
Virginians are lucky to have incredible access to important historic sites, many of which also provide excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation. This is thanks to decades of work by local citizens, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies working together to protect and open up these important sites to the public.
These special places, supported by tremendous public investment, are now at risk. The noise, visual impacts, and water usage of data center campuses, as well as the enormous amount of energy infrastructure needed to power them fundamentally threaten the experience of the millions of people who visit these sites each year.
We need your help to protect Wilderness Battlefield and to reform data center development here in Virginia. Here are a few things you can do today to protect our public resources:
Donate to the American Battlefield Trust, Central Virginia Battlefields Trust, and Friends of Wilderness Battlefield. They are seeking financial support for their lawsuit seeking to prevent the Wilderness Crossing development from moving forward.
Reach out to your elected officials. Email, call, or write a letter to your local and state representatives to let them know that you support increased regulation on the data center industry and protections for our public spaces.
Attend public meetings. If there are any data center projects being proposed in your town or county, attend a public hearing about them. Decisions about projects like these are made without much public attention. Show up and let your local government know where you stand.
Support the Piedmont Environmental Council and other Wilderness Battlefield Coalition members. We need your support to continue this work.

Expanding Access to The Rappahannock River
This video is stored and played from a data center. Hosted by one of the biggest corporations in the world. Ironic at best.
This video is stored at a data center.
This video is stored at data centers for at least Facebook and Google (UA-cam). It’s ironic, like getting lectured about climate change by someone who flies in a private jet and drives an huge SUV!
More regulations mean added cost to the end user no matter how you slice it. We need to find more sustainable solutions, but conservation of energy resources is the best answer at this point, not adding more strain on the grid or more regulations, unless those regulations mean forcing the corporations to pay for their own solutions to sustainable power....but they are not going to pay because ultimately it will still be the end user that pays. We demand convenience and speed and these companies deliver with the massive data centers. If you are watching this video on your phone or laptop or TV, you are demanding that energy and that data computing power. All while we have regulations in place to stop using fossil fuels, and at the same time insisting that we go all electric with EV's heating, etc, and vilifying power companies, nuclear energy, solar farms, etc in the process. Pick your poison. We have no way to produce enough energy, the power grid is already near capacity. There is no 'Green energy". Every form of energy production has a cost, and every one puts a strain on the environment. I don't claim to have the answer, but humans are parasitic in nature. I am hoping the next generation can come up with better solutions, but in the meantime, you can't keep calling for more regulations, less use of fossil fuels, and expect the cost not to continue to dramatically rise or the environmental effects to continue to exist. Mega corporations do make an insane amount of money, its supply and demand. When you have to heat the entire outside of Home depot and Walmart in the winter so customers can be comfortable when they walk into the store, or you have the continuous demand for more streaming, more computing power, AI, and all the rest of our energy diet, you are not going to solve the problem with regulations. We have brought all of this on ourselves and we will continue to destroy the environment and deplete our resources through greed and selfishness. Its unfortunate, but that seems to be the fate of humanity. Cheers
In Virginia, not only are we the homeowners subsidizing the infrastructure, Virginia gives large elec cost discount to business. I would ask what cloud centers pay for elec cost vs. little old Me? That probably starts to tell you that Virginia utility policy is very favorable to cloud. Also Virginia demands cloud go to state monopoly for power, but with the discounts, what's not to like? Then of course Virginia is a blue state so we are demanding the worlds most expensive carbon-free electric: offshore wind and nukes. We residents are being complacent letting elected officials force us into extreme high elec bills in the future. We saw this when we lived in NJ and NJ went full nukes back in the 70's and NJ had about the highest cost elec in the nation.. And I did not even start yet about the eco issues.
Thank you! I had a plan in my head on how to do this myself. Glad I found your video first!
Thank you! Who are the people who produced this video?
Thank you for watching! We produced this video in-house. Hugh Kenny, our multimedia communications specialist, was the primary videographer and editor.
My descendants, the Luttrell family was an indentured servant who got off a ship and this is where he was listed as living. James Luttrell 1650-1698 was 1 of 27 that was traded for 1350 acres to a ship captain for their transport. Any info you have on him and his lineage would help in furthering my goal of finding out my family history in Europe. We descended from Luttrellstown or Dunster castle. We fought with William the Conquerer at Hastings in 1066 and with Washington against Cornwallis. We as well as fought for the north in the civil war and many other conflicts. We have fought and died for the forming of 2 separate nations and I would love to know any of the information you may have to confirm my findings.
Thank you for watching and commenting! We'd recommend reaching out directly to the Fauquier Afro-American Historical Association, they have excellent resources available to help folks learn about their ancestry here in Fauquier County. www.aahafauquier.org/contact
Thanks for this video i did not know all of this.
So thankful for this park. An oasis in a rapidly developing area.
Well done, well lived!
Ashburn has become a visual eyesore with those data centers that look like prisons.
I never knew how much hot air was coming into my house (6 feet from my thermostat), until I checked the temp... Ambient temp was 5 degrees warmer right under the opening at head level after about 90 seconds. I don't need to wait any longer. Now I know why my electric bill is so high in summer, and my bedroom is freezing when the thermostat says 73! EDIT: Oh, I did not try the fix yet, I'll be back Friday for a follow u, providing it's a nice hot day to test the fix. I wonder if anyone is listening after 14 years. Great 14 year old youtube video right here.
So you want to stop data centres (what runs everything on the internet) and secondly what since do the data centres no pay for electricity they would pay majority of the power no the residents. Find true facts before yapping rubbish
Such a beautiful landscape. So lush and soothing.
Make data centers function off of solar .
Do you have any photos of a Harrison Lafayette Crabtree who worked there In the mid to late 1930s ?
I have some questions about this presentation. It suggested that the general consumer is subsidizing these centers. How is that happening? Is it a higher cost per unit of power? If so, how much? Is the benefit of a good internet connection worth the additional cost? We know or should know that increased power consumption per person is going to be the norm for the foreseeable future. It would have been nice if some real numbers could have been provided during this nicely done video.
Yes, for the Northern Virginia example, the cost of the additional generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure needed to support the data centers is rolled into Dominion's rate base and paid for by all Dominion customers. The cost of additional generation and transmission infrastructure is significant and it's not fair that residential consumers have to pay for infrastructure upgrades that are only needed because of growing data center load. That's asking everyday people to subsidize a business expense of a billion dollar corporation. Also, the existence of data centers doesn't affect the reliability of the internet connection to your home.
Northern Virginia having a good fiber/internet backbone is why data centers decided to cluster here. Also being closer to large end users of these service(government). That means that localities in Northern Virginia have leverage, not the other way around. I think there can be some negotiating to have these data centers pay a higher rate than the average consumer, or they can locate somewhere else that won’t enforce this.
Data Collection is a Globalist Fraud and Psyop Operation! We people may have a say to solve this problem created by the Globalists. Here are some suggestions: 1 Dismantle the WiFi system entirely and only allow the internet through the wired conncetion like I am writing this comment from my laptop connected with a cable. Cell Phones will only be used for Voice Calls, SMS and MMS. In this way, most of the useless data will go, birds will be saved as there is a huge data traffic coming via WiFi cell phone towers. So, cable is the best option. Why are we always connected? Even sitting in the bathroom for excretion, we are connected! 2 Clean the internet from social media, porn sites, news media, entertainment media, dating sites and dark web along with all other useless globalist garbage. For what we are on social media wasting our time and energy? Are we data generators for the Globalist Cabals? Don't forget that social media and porn have very severe effects on the masses. So, outlaw those 5 or 6 things to be on the internet to begin with as they shouldn't be on the internet in the first place. We must have live in person social gatherings, cinema halls and news papers. Why the hell everything is on the internet? Why every fifth girl is lip singing on tiktok making shorts and reels? What is the point of OnlyFan whores and sluts? 3 Outlaw data collection, saving and selling for all public and private entities. For what Globalist monsters need so much data? Rather, data shall only be collected and saved by public or private service providing entities like banks, hospitals, universities, ministries etc. in their own small data center or like other private companies that provide audio video call service or blogging platforms. Hence, all bad omen technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Bodies, Internet of Things, Mass Surveillance, Safe City, Self Driving, Smart City, Smart Dust) will eventually die out and disappear into oblivion. Remember! global satanic beast always feeds on our energy, effort and resources. In this way, we can also cure many social ills like slutty behaviour, attention whoring, nudity, degeneracy and globalist overreach. It is matter of principles, policies and orientation not invention or technology.
This is a very informative presentation, not sure why it has not many views, needs to be shared
Don't let rural citizens have money for education and salaries for members of the community. Let's sequester land in permanent conservation easements and send those tax credits to Wall Street billionaires!
Suggestion for your next video: Explain how humans can control the weather only if politicians are given more power and money 😂
Wait till you see how much power it takes to run all the EV''s everyone says they want
These data centers should build their own power supply systems.
I have to wonder how many of us on private water wells throughout the state will be affected by datacenters constructed near our homes, in addition to the electricity requirements for them. It seems that many small counties have taken a shift in recent years politically and are now courting datacenters over businesses, looking strictly at the tax revenue without concern for the impact on their residents.
2:30 i'm so glad that idiot said " Billion with a B ". There I was thinking it was billion with a sack of worms and a plumber's wrench!
Most people know that The Cloud is not up in the sky but datacenters. Thus the language wasn't The Genius. The Genius was to conceal that datacenters aren't something new in Northern Virginia. That many were built in the 90's, and highly disliked by residents. Followed with those data centers being abandoned, not because of community objection, but because of the Tech Bubble crash. Followed with News articles of the community being saddled with these useless eyesores.
Not one solution proposed. Just whining. If you are really worried about energy usage, stop air conditioning your house and give up your iPhone and give up your car. Also give up ice in your Coke: how wasteful to make ice that is thrown away after five minutes. Data centers do not pollute the air nor water any more than any other building: that is a fact and it is in deed heavily regulated.
😂
I’ve seen some open designs that seem better at texting kestrels. A perch and a pretty open design with a roof and sides but open front.
If we switched all server code to run C-code vs PHP, Python, Swift and other crappy, slow languages, we could cut energy usage by 90%.
Virginia, particularly Northern Virginia, has become a global hub for data centers, with significant benefits accruing to the state and local communities. Let me argue why Virginia should maintain a positive view on data centers, especially regarding their role in driving local investments and supporting public spending on schools, roads, and other infrastructure: 1. Data centers bring considerable economic growth to Virginia. The construction and operation of data centers require a substantial workforce, including construction workers, engineers, IT professionals, and administrative staff. This job creation can reduce unemployment rates and increase the overall standard of living in the communities where these data centers are located. 2. Data centers contribute significantly to local and state tax revenues. The property taxes, sales taxes on equipment purchases, and other levies associated with data centers can be substantial. These tax revenues can be used to fund public schools, infrastructure projects, public safety, and other community needs. In many cases, the presence of data centers has allowed local governments to improve public services without increasing tax rates for residents. 3. Data center operators often invest in local infrastructure improvements as part of their development projects. This can include upgrades to power grids, water supply, and telecommunications networks, which not only serve the data centers but also benefit the surrounding communities. 4. The presence of state-of-the-art data centers makes Virginia an attractive location for technology companies and other businesses that require robust digital infrastructure. This can lead to a clustering effect, where businesses choose to locate near these facilities, further boosting the local economy and creating additional jobs. 5. The growth of the data center industry in Virginia can spur educational and training programs in local schools and universities, focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. This educational focus can prepare the local workforce for high-tech jobs, contributing to higher overall education levels and better job opportunities for residents. 6. Many data centers in Virginia are leading the way in adopting renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies. This focus on sustainability can help reduce the environmental impact of these facilities and serve as a model for other industries in the state. 7. Hosting a significant portion of the world's data center capacity positions Virginia as a key player in the global technology landscape. This leadership can attract international investments and enhance the state's prestige in the technology sector. In conclusion, the presence of data centers in Virginia is complex, but it brings considerable benefits, including job creation, tax revenue, infrastructure improvements, educational opportunities, and a stronger position in the global technology market. These factors can contribute to enhanced public spending on schools, roads, and other essential services, benefiting the entire community.
Just call Elon, he'll install solar roofs and megapacks. That should easily cover all their energy needs and make enough to sell back for extra revenue 🙄
Such a bullshit video. The fact about data centers is great!!! Discussion should be on energy sources.
This video, while informative is factually incorrect. There are substantial regulations regarding the construction of a data center. It also fails to ask the simple question - why do we need data centers. If you're reading this, the answer is at your fingertips.
Nope, but nice try. They are collecting personal data for marketing purposes. The internet was working fine well before they started putting up these ugly buildings in Nova.
Remove the non-stop background noise and re-upload the video - for us to understand what is said. Finite fossil fuels are dangerously hypnotic to humans, their consciousness, reasoning and mental capacity. Humans were not ready morally, ethically and intellectually to start the mass extraction of fossil fuels with the advent of the steam engine 300 years ago. The Magna Carta requires today overhauling - adding to it the right for humans to understand what Energy really is - before any other commandment; “In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most. No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores. No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it. This universal truth applies to all systems. Energy, like time, flows from past to future” (2017).
One data center that I went to for Facebook took 30 MW for half of the plant
Some of the points you make are good. the use of natural gas is potentially putting out pollutants. At this point, we don't have efficient ways to store renewable energy (wind, solar, etc), so it can't provide a continuous feed of power sufficient for the data industry. One thing that is overlooked is the ability to use spent nuclear fuels. CNBC hand an article on June 2, 2022 entitled, "The energy in nuclear waste could power the U.S. for 100 years, but the technology was never commercialized". I once spoke to a Dept. of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission nuclear physicist who told me that we could build completely solid reactors that could be fueled by spent nuclear fuel and buried 30 feet below ground ... completely safe, and they could power neighborhoods for 30 years. Certainly larger devices could be used for the data centers and not require large, distant infrastructure. Unfortunately, there are groups that stand against nuclear power, so we have to continue to use gas, oil, and coal. What a shame.
❤
Virginia is Beautiful.
Your mom is beautiful
Build nuclear plants Emission free Ocean water cooling Air cooled data centers
In virginia (and it neighbors) water is so dirty they don't recomend eating it (resources) fishes for more than 1-4 times per month depending on the fish and area, some like carp shouldn't be eaten at all because in it health fatty oils they might have PCB (it gives cancer and other issues). So it's really shitty to be wasting money in other stuff while there are creeks and rivers still leaking PCBs... plus who knows what other evil chemicals are acumulating
Thank goodness Elon Musk and the Tesla team is working on protecting the entire PLANET🙂
Protecting what? Electric vehicles are not good for the environment
It's everywhere the same with big data centers. Local politicians of the liberal or right wing allow these kind of developments to happen, many times promising great economical benefits to local society, only needing some security guards because day to day operations are all done remotely. And then you have to provide them power and the rest of the infrastructure they need. Over here in the Netherlands we have seen the same scheme of data centers popping up. Local politicians are feted by the big companies behind data centers. Over here landowners are in cahoots with politicians, mostly farmers - because of the lack of wastelands - who are offered a big chunk of money. Energy is provided by wind turbines and solar farms partially financed by energy transition tax payed by end consumers not commercial consumers. Microsoft and Google did the green washing in their communication and took the credits, not the debits. Story continues with lease constructions and tax schemes (avoidance) that are to the disadvantage of society as a whole. Our central government finally woke up from dreamland in 2022, preventing Meta from building a 24+ acres, 70+ MW data center. Good luck over there.
Same scenario here and it's getting worse. Sadly, the public doesn't realize we citizens are all being groomed to store more and more frivolous data to keep the demand for data centers growing and benefitting investors. We need to raise awareness in the Gen Z generation since they care more about the environment then older generations. (A recent study found this.)
1 - Did not compare datacenter growth with other states. 2 - Provided no evidence that electric is being subsidized by residents.
The INFRASTRUCTURE is being subsidized by residents AND other businesses - the cost to bring the infrastructure to those dystopian behemoths is spread among all of Dominion's customers.
You’re not a real person
Allow me to translate: Data Centre = a building where your personal information is collected and sold. The Cloud = Someone else’s computer/server.
Add AI and stir! AI is cited as a reason why we NEED data centers. Propaganda in the same vein of why we needed personal computers. "Life will be better. We'll be more efficient. No need for paper records." Well, that golden age is over. We are now collectively experiencing ransomware attacks and personal identity theft due to our connection to the internet on a daily basis. Life is not better now nor more efficient. We have to pay for ways to protect our personal data through VPNs, anti-virus programs, and identity theft insurance. Corporations don't safeguard our personal data effectively or ransomware would not be happening. It remains to be seen if AI will protect our data better or hold it for ransom better....
Everyone should watch this.
Is anyone not receiving enough emails and text messages? The proliferation of data centers is not driven by consumer demand. The proliferation is driven by the money to be made and thw power to be had by surveiling the populatiom. Data is the new oil. Virginia is ground zero because citizens have to pay for the infrastructure development--even though corporations and the alphabet agencies are the ones who profit and use the data.
Poor presentation. Obviously they didn’t give facts about how the cooperations pay more then the home consumer. Funny that this video is being saved in a data center. If you don’t want them then turn off your phones, internet and go back to the 1970s.
Data Centers should pay more than consumers. Consumer demand is going down. Data centers are swarming to VA bc current VA law passes infrastructure costs on to consumers even when the infrastructure is only needed bc of data centers.
What an ill-informed response, Mike. HALF of the WORLD’s internet traffic goes through northern Virginia and there is NO COMPREHENSIVE plan.
Mike is a plant 🪴. He's not a local citizen
How dumb can you be, buy an hp server and Nutanix and Pure storage array and be done with it
@mikeowen1666 tell me you're a shill without telling me you're a shill
Very well done! Thank you PEC!
Excellent video and just what I need to share to raise public awareness in Fayetteville, GA where our elected officials are bragging about having brought “the world’s largest data center campus” to our neighborhoods. This is a 615 acre (7 million sq. ft.) monstrosity c/o QTS. Our town population is only 19k and we have the second largest per capita income in the state so we don’t need the handful of average paying jobs. The deforestation of 600 acres that’s taking place now has already polluted the wetlands and creeks. My heart is breaking for the wildlife being cruelly killed and displaced. 😢
